Poem of the Day

If You Forget Me

by Pablo Neruda

I want you to know

one thing.

You know how this is:

if I look

at the crystal moon, at the red branch

of the slow autumn at my window,

if I touch

near the fire

the impalpable ash

or the wrinkled body of the log,

everything carries me to you,

as if everything that exists,

aromas, light, metals,

were little boats

that sail

toward those isles of yours that wait for me.

Well, now,

if little by little you stop loving me

I shall stop loving you little by little.

If suddenly

you forget me

do not look for me,

for I shall already have forgotten you.

If you think it long and mad,

the wind of banners

that passes through my life,

and you decide

to leave me at the shore

of the heart where I have roots,

remember

that on that day,

at that hour,

I shall lift my arms

and my roots will set off

to seek another land.

But

if each day,

each hour,

you feel that you are destined for me

with implacable sweetness,

if each day a flower

climbs up to your lips to seek me,

ah my love, ah my own,

in me all that fire is repeated,

in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten,

my love feeds on your love, beloved,

and as long as you live it will be in your arms

without leaving mine

I just discovered this poem today.  I love how he expresses his feelings for his love.  I love how he talks like if she were to decide to not love him anymore, he will have already made the decision to no love her first.  As if our hearts will allow us to do that.

Ode to 7am

Ode to 7am
from the night shift

7am
How I adore thee
on a chilly spring night
in the office.

Yesterday, I dreaded you
I could not appreciate your
beauty,
Nor the great peace that you bring
in the form of
my day shift co-worker.

Ahhhhh, 7am.
I begin the countdown
and anxiously await your return.

But, please remember,
I will not be waiting for you
Saturday.
Please don't wake the baby
when you arrive.

Days

As the days drift together I no longer know if it is Tuesday or Saturday
I no longer know if it is 5 am or 12 noon
I don't know when the last time I showered or ate was

I hear that this is "normal"
It's not "normal" for me

As the days drift together I no longer remember
I don't remember why I am here
Why you are there
I don't remember

I want to throw something at the wall
All I am holding is a life so precious and small
she screams, she cries, makes me want to die
I hold her close, then put her down
I don't remember why.

As the days drift by
So do all the people
I watch out my window
Then go lie down again, alone

As the days drift together I no longer remember
why I thought I'd be okay
On my own again

Pink pills, oh you happy pink pills
when was the last time I took you?
yesterday, last week, an hour ago?
when can I take another one?
When will the "give a fuck" kick in?

As the days drift together I no longer remember if its Tuesday or Saturday
I no longer care.

Aches

My heart aches for you
I have stood at the crossroads
that you are standing at
I have struggled with those same
Decisions
My feelings vs Their feelings
My love vs Their indifference
I want to hold your hand through it all
I want to tell you it gets easier
Alas
It does not.
People like us,
empathetic people,
people that feel so deeply
the feeling of others,
will always be in pain.
It is our curse.
I am sorry that I passed it on
to
you.
those other people
DO
NOT
DESERVE
YOU!
I can assure you
though,
you will find that person
that evens you out,
stands up for you against the forces of
the world.
That
one and only person
that doesn't claim to be anything else
but
yours.
stand tall
knowing
that you are the best
you
no one does it better
My heart aches for you.
I wish you would accept
my words
wrapped
in my love.
I want nothing more than to see you happy.
